Excuses Begone! by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

May 24th, 2009

This weekend, I read the latest book by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer entitled Excuses Begone!: How to Change Lifelong, Self-Defeating Thinking Habits.

I benefited from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s discussion of excuses and ways to go past them and take back our power.

[On page 62-63 © 2009 Wayne W Dyer] Dr. Wayne W. Dyer writes:

Here’s a recap an affirmation for each of the 18 most commonly used excuses. The affirmations will assist you in making a conscious effort to encourage yourself to elevate your beliefs, unquestionably!

  1. It will be difficult: I have the ability to accomplish any task I set my mind to with ease and comfort.
  2. It’s going to be risky: Being myself involves no risks. It is my ultimate truth, and I live it fearlessly.
  3. It will take a long time: I have infinite patience when it comes to fulfilling my destiny.
  4. There will be family drama: I would rather be loathed for who I am than loved for who I am not.
  5. I don’t deserve it: I am a Divine creation, a piece of God. Therefore, I cannot be undeserving.
  6. It’s not my nature: My essential nature is perfect and faultless. It is to this nature that I return.
  7. I can’t afford it: I am connected to an unlimited source of abundance.
  8. No one will help me: The right circumstances and the right people are already here and will show up on time.
  9. It has never happened before: I am willing to attract all that I desire, beginning here and now.
  10. I’m not strong enough: I have access to unlimited assistance. My strength comes from my connection to my Source of being.
  11. I’m not smart enough: I am a creation of the Divine mind; all is perfect, and I am a genius in my own right.
  12. I’m too old (or not old enough): I am an infinite being. The age of my body has no bearing on what I do or who I am.
  13. The rules won’t let me: I live my life according to Divine rules.
  14. It’s too big: I think only about what I can do now. By thinking small, I accomplish great things.
  15. I don’t have the energy: I feel passionately about my life, and this passion fills me with excitement and energy.
  16. It’s my personal family history: I live in the present moment by being grateful for all of my life experiences as a child.
  17. I’m too busy: As I unclutter my life, I free myself to answer the callings of my soul.
  18. I’m too scared: I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, because I know that I am never alone.

Those affirmations are in PART I of the book, the shortest part of the book.

PART II outlines the Principles that encourage Excuses Begone!.

PART III explains the Paradigm shift associated with Excuses Begone!.

Not since the book, The Power of Intention and the DVD, Ambition to Meaning: Finding Your Life’s Purposes, expanded version by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer have I enjoyed and learned so much about my own experience from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer.

Blessings,

Barry

Good Luck by Alex Rovira and Fernando Trias de Bes

May 10th, 2009

Over the weekend, I read Good Luck: Creating the Conditions for Success in Life and Business by Alex Rovira and Fernando Trias de Bes.

This little fable is a joyful easy read.

This little fable is powerful in it’s simplicity as it illustrates the difference between Luck and Good Luck.

This little fable begins and ends with two childhood friends reconnecting as men in their sixties.

This little fable shares the story one man’s grandfather told to him growing up . . . a fable about a challenge Merlin the Magician made to the knights of the kingdom.

This little fable has nothing to do with King Arthur, and everything to do with anyone who has ever wondered what role Luck and Good Luck play in our lives.

I highly recommend Good Luck: Creating the Conditions for Success in Life and Business by Alex Rovira and Fernando Trias de Bes as it is a fun and insightful read.

Blessings,

Barry

Illusions by Richard Bach

May 2nd, 2009

For many years, one of my favorite fiction books has been Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach.

Written in 1977, this book was a part of my twenties more than most any other book.

It was the much anticipated follow-up book to Richard Bach’s 1970 best selling book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

If you have never read these books, I highly recommend them.

If you have read them, I highly recommend reading them again, and then pass them onto someone you love.

Blessings,

Barry

The Diamond Cutter by Geshe Michael Roach

April 13th, 2009

Today, I finished reading The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Strategies for Managing Your Business and Your Life by Geshe Michael Roach.

Geshe Michael Roach is a fully ordained Buddhist monk who received his geshe (master of Buddhism) degree from Sera Mey Tibetan Monastery after twenty-two years of study.

In The Diamond Cutter, Geshe Michael Roach shares his story of being in The Diamond Cutter Business as well as the most up to date translation of The Diamond Cutter - a conversation with The Buddha.

Geshe Michael Roach talks primarily about the Emptiness of Life, which can take on any prespective we place upon it.

The Emptiness of Life states that “What Is” is Empty of any ideas.

The Emptiness of Life states that people can attach any idea onto “What Is”.

The Emptiness of Life states this concept is “True” because if it were not, everyone would experience everything in the exact same way.

On page 84, Geshe Michael Roach writes [copyright © 2000 Geshe Michael Roach]:

… correlations between specific actions, their imprints, and what they make you see. We can summarize them as follows:

1) In order to see yourself do well in business and prosper financially, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by maintaining a generous state of mind.

2) In order to see yourself in a world which is just generally a very happy place, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by maintaining a very ethical way of life.

3) In order to see yourself as physically healthy and attractive, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by refusing to ever get angry.

4) In order to see yourself as a leader in both your personal life and in business, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by taking joy in constructive and helpful actions.

5) In order to see yourself able to focus your mind steadily, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by practicing deep states of concentration, or meditation.

6) In order to see yourself freed from a world where things don’t work the way you want them to, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by learning the principles of hidden potential and mental imprints.

7) In order to see yourself get all your ever wished for, and see others get all they ever wished for as well, plant imprints for this in your subconscious by cultivating an attitude of compassion towards others.

From my understanding of Geshe Michael Roach’s sharing …

Life is less of a mirror. ie: I lie => you lie => I lie
Life is more of a projector. ie: If I believe that people lie => I will perceive you as lying
Life is a lot like gardening. ie: Every moment we plant a seed => that grows and blooms over time.

Whatever seed we plant, will be projected onto life and eventualy bloom in my life experience.

So the seven concepts above could be written as follows:

1. Every moment I plant a seed … of generosity … leads to an experience of financial prosperity.

2. Every moment I plant a seed … of being ethical … leads to an experience of happiness.

3. Every moment I plant a seed … of being joyful … leads to an experience of radiant health and beauty.

4. Every moment I plant a seed … of joyful, constructive, and helpful actions … leads to an experience of personal and business success.

5. Every moment I plant a seed … of meditation/contemplation … leads to Strengthening my ability of Mental Focus.

6. Every moment I plant a seed … of understanding Pure Potential Energy … leads to an experience of understanding life.

7. Every moment I plant a seed … of Compassion towards others … leads to seeing myself (and others) getting everything we desire and wish for.

I recommend this book for many reasons, most of which opened me to an understanding of the Diamond Industry as a metaphor of success in business and life using these principles.

On page 225, Geshe Michael Roach writes [copyright © 2000 Geshe Michael Roach]:

The mind — a mind crippled by the assumptions and, frankly, fairy tales of the entire history of our civilization, passed down by well-meaning parents over its entire length — balks at the possibility that every living person could have more than enough wealth. It’s not something that has ever happened before in our recorded history, says this state of mind, and so it could not happen now. We’ve heard this argument before; it wasn’t true then, and it’s not true now. Watch out, Columbus, you’ll fall over the edge, because the world is flat. Iron could never fly in the sky, or float for that matter. It’s not possible that practically every person in the world could have the same access to the world’s information, running through wires made of glass or beamed down from a place beyond where the highest bird can fly. Where did all these things come from? Did they not alter the absolute amount of wealth in the world? Where does new wealth really come from?

On page 223, Geshe Michael Roach writes [copyright © 2000 Geshe Michael Roach]:

When you give something away to another person, when you help any single other living being with your hands or your time or your funds, then a certain imprint is planted in your mind; the act is always recorded by the consciousness of the act, and consciousness is turned on and recording all the time. This imprint stays in the subconscious gathering strength, growing in power like any physical plant or tree. At some point it makes its way to the head of the line of your awareness, into your conscious mind, and colors — even creates — your impression of the world around you, and even yourself.

So right this moment, ask yourself, “What seed am I planting?”

Plant more seeds that bloom into the things you love.

Blessings,

Barry

Byron Katie “Who Would You Be Without Your Story?”

February 23rd, 2009

I have been a big follower of Byron Katie ever since I discovered The Work.

This past week I absorbed her latest book, Who Would You Be Without Your Story?: Dialogues with Byron Katie.

In her latest book, a collection of fifteen dialogues from Byron Katie’s The Work are presented for readers to experience the dialogues along with the participants (as a tool to understand our own challenges).

The dialogues include titles like:

a) My Mother Wouldn’t Approve
b) The Rent Increase
c) Frank Bosses Me Around
d) Cancer Ruined My Life
e) My Sister The Prostitute
f) My Husband Shouldn’t Have Left Me
g) My Father Abused Me
h) Scared and Angry at God

Always through these dialogues, Byron Katie encourages The Work as a tool to help one understand the way the mind keeps us where we say we no longer wish to be.

The Work is a process that involves four questions and a turn around.

1. Is it true?
2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
4. Who would you be without the thought?

5. Turn the thought around

What I continue to find incredible is the simplicity with which (as I read these dialogues from someone else’s experience) I can identify with the stuck thought patterns of the participants.

It’s not that I necessarily have had the same experiences, rather that without controlling my mind, my mind can control me, with justifications and shoulds and shouldn’ts, as evidenced when I agree with the thought patterns of participants and then feel relief as Byron Katie helps them move to a new understanding.

All Byron Katie offers through The Work is the gift (4 Questions and a Turnaround) that freed her from her personal suffering.

I highly recommend this book and The Work of Byron Katie.

Blessings,

Barry
